February 2010
Heart Healthy Month
Each day, the average heart beats 100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood. In a 70 year lifetime, an average human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.
Physical activity plays a major role in keeping your heart healthy. You can take a few simple steps at home, work and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life.
- Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator.
- Park your car at the far end of the parking lot.
- If you ride the bus, get off a stop before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
- Spend a few minutes of your lunch breaking taking a walk.
- Think of housework as a chance to exercise.
- Mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and raking leaves are great ways to exercise.
- If you have a dog, take time to take it for a walk everyday. A brisk walk is good for both of your hearts.
- Schedule an after dinner walk with your family for both exercise and quality time.
